Raiders duo charged with drink-driving over off-season

Canberra Raiders stars Corey Harawira-Naera and Corey Horsburgh have been charged with drink driving in separate incidents over the Christmas holidays.

It is understood Horsburgh’s offence was low-range. Details of Harawira-Naera’s reading are not yet known.

“The Canberra Raiders can confirm that both Corey Harawira-Naera and Corey Horsburgh were involved in separate incidents during the Christmas holiday period,” the club said in a statement.

“Both incidents were reported directly to the NRL Integrity unit at the time and the club continues to keep them informed of any developments. As both issues are still pending court matters, the club will not be making further comment.”

Harawira-Naera was deregistered by the NRL in April last year for his part in the Bulldogs’ Port Macquarie schoolgirl sex scandal. While the deregistration was later overturned on appeal, the 25-year-old requested a release from the Bulldogs to move to the Raiders towards the end of the 2020 season.

Speaking to Nine News after his move to Canberra, Harawira-Naera said he hoped to repay the Raiders for showing faith in him.

“For them taking a risk on me is sort of enough to pull my head in and make it work down here,” he said at the time. It’s time to grow up and be the player I want to be and the person I want to be. I’m just really grateful, Sticky is a really good person and a coach”

Raiders coach Ricky Stuart is said to be less than impressed by the actions of both players. The court date for 23-year-old Horsburgh is listed for February 23 with Harawira-Naera’s yet to be fixed. ACT Police said they would not comment on individual court matters.

“The Canberra Raiders advised the Integrity Unit of the alleged offences and the Integrity Unit is awaiting further information from police,” a statement from the NRL read.
