Spanish new-car sales dropped 52 percent in January to 41,966 units, according to the ANFAC industry group.

The result was the worst January for the market since 1989.

In addition to having two fewer selling days, automakers continued to be hit by the effects of the coronavirus pandemic. Between Jan. 6 and 11, Spain was also battered by storm Filomena, which forced dealerships to shut for several days, especially in the Madrid region.

Demand was also depressed by the end of Spain's scrapping program, Plan Renove, which expired in December.

Registration tax, which is applied for vehicles emitting CO2 above 120 grams per km, also increased for many models on Jan. 1, as emissions values for each car were converted from the NEDC test cycle to the more stringent WLTP procedure, which yields higher CO2 figures.

Unlike in countries such as France or Italy, the Spanish government declined to ensure that the change was revenue neutral.

According to the FACONAUTO dealer group, some private customers brought forward their purchases to December to avoid the registration tax increase.

Sales to private customers in January were down 53 percent, and company registrations (including self-registrations by automakers and dealers) fell by 44 percent. Sales to rental companies dropped by 65 percent, as coronavirus restrictions still limit travel and business trips.

To try and boost sales, industry group ANFAC has asked the government to restart the scrapping scheme.

    EV sales hit hard

Sales of full-electric vehicles fell 66 percent in January for a 1.1 percent share, while plug-in hybrid vehicles were down 1.9 percent with a 2.7 percent share. Sales of full-hybrid vehicles declined 22 percent to 9,293 units, with a 22.1 percent market share.

Sales of gasoline-powered cars dropped by 59 percent for a 46 percent market share, down 8 percentage points from January 2020. Registrations of diesels were down 45 percent for a 25.4 percent share, 2.3 percentage points lower than January 2020.

LPG-powered vehicles bucked the trend with growth of 48 percent to 818 units.

Only some premium and low-volume brands managed to increase sales in January.

Tesla was up 44 percent, while SsangYong grew by 25 percent.

Ferrari doubled sales and Maserati grew by 9.1 percent.

The Volkswagen brand was among the worst hit, with a 73 percent decline. It fell to No. 10 in the ranking from being the most popular brand in December. VW Group's Spanish unit, Seat, was the most popular brand in January despite suffering a 45 percent decline.

Among other VW Group brands, Skoda fell 51 percent and Audi 55 percent. Porsche sales increased 6.1 percent.

Within the Stellantis Group, Peugeot brand sales declined 47 percent, Opel dropped 71 percent and Citroen was down 58 percent. Fiat brand registrations declined by 50 percent, with Jeep down 22 percent and Alfa Romeo dropping by 46 percent.

Renault brand sales were down 31 percent for the month, while Dacia sales fell by 40 percent.

Toyota sales fell 45 percent and Nissan was down 60 percent.

Hyundai sales fell 51 percent, while sibling brand Kia posted a 55 percent decline.

    Ford was down 46 percent.

BMW sales fell 48 percent, while Mercedes-Benz dropped by 56 percent.
