Updated Lamborghini Urus spied – super-SUV due for a facelift
Lamborghini’s Urus SUV looks set for some updates, but how far will it go?
The Lamborghini Urus SUV is set to be updated later this year, with a pre-production prototype spotted testing a range of subtle changes underneath its camouflage. The controversial model certainly turned heads when it arrived in 2018, yet its strong sales performance has proven to be an important factor in Lamborghini’s financials, so it’s no surprise to see it being paid some attention.
This example was spied cold weather testing, and while it’s not clear if it’s hiding a simple facelift or a new variant in the Urus range, look closely and you will find some subtle styling changes buried underneath the cladding.
Starting at the nose, we can clearly see a subtly redesigned grille and fascia which loses the current Urus’s controversial horizontal forks in lieu of simpler slats. The areas surrounding these elements don’t look any less complex though, with vanes and new shrouds that will likely add up to an aesthetic not dissimilar to the current model.
The other noticeable change is around the rear bumper, where just behind the rear wheel sits a new opening that could point towards wider bodywork, although this could just as easily be explained by a reshaping of the rear bumper.
What changes lie underneath the bodywork is the more pertinent question, though, and with Lamborghini’s future model strategy embedded within electrification, the query of whether this new Urus will adopt it is difficult to ascertain at this stage.
What is certain is that the Urus’s shared platform, powertrain and chassis technology with models from Porsche, Bentley and Audi opens up a wide range of electrification options that are already available within its mechanical tool kit.
Whatever scenario Lamborghini decides to adopt for the new Urus, it is likely to continue the use of its current 4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, electrified or not. In its current form, the Urus produces 640bhp – the highest output of this unit within the group and equal to that of the Porsche Panamera Turbo S.
Lamborghini has yet to confirm when we might expect this new Urus, but we're told it is still a fair while away.
