Meghalaya legislator David Nongrum passes away

Shillong, Feb 2 (UNI) Sitting Congress legislator in Meghalaya, David Nongrum suddenly passed away on Tuesday morning following a massive cardiac arrest. He was 42.
Nongrum was the son of senior Congress leader and former Assembly Speaker, Charles Pyngrope. He was first elected as an member to the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly in 2013 as an independent candidate and had joined the Congress in 2018.
Nongrum was declared brought dead by doctors of the North East Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) hospital, Pyngrope said.
“He (Nongrum) died due to a massive cardiac arrest,” Pyngrope said.
During his political career, Nongrum served as an Assembly Committee member for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled tribe and Public Undertakings.
In his condolence message, Assembly Speaker, Methbah Lyngdoh said, Nongrum would be remembered as a “young and promising legislator” who dedicated his life for the service of the people.
Expressing his sadness at the untimely demise of the legislator, Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma said, “He was a young, dynamic and vocal leader who executed an impactful tenure. My heartfelt condolences to the family in this hour of grief. May his soul rest in peace.”
Power Minister, James Sangma in his message said: “extremely shocked and saddened to hear of the demise of David Nongrum. His death is a loss not only to the people of his Constituency but also to the State. I extend my deepest sympathies to the bereaved family and may God give them strength in this time of grief.”
Lone Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) legislator and chairman Privileges Committee Meghalaya Assembly, Saleng Sangma said, the members of recalled their association with Nongrum and his contributions to the House and Committees.
The Congress Legislature Party has also condoled the sudden demise of Nongrum.
Messages expressing grief over the sudden death of the young legislator have been pouring in from several quarters, even as people in his constituency have been making a beeline to pay their last respects to the departed public leader, who was known for his impeccable and friendly personality across the board.
