MADURAI: Doctors in a private hospital in Madurai removed an iron nail from the abdomen of a 4-year-old girl through an endoscopic procedure after she accidentally swallowed it. The girl has made full recovery.
The girl from Checkanoorani was admitted to NTC Hospital on January 8 after she swallowed a nail accidentally when she was playing near her home. On diagnosis, it was found that the nail was lodged inside her stomach. Considering the age of child, doctors decided to perform endoscopic removal process.
A team comprising laparoscopic surgeon Dr Rajkumar, general surgeon Dr Ganesh Kumar, anaesthetist Dr Malarvizhi performed the procedure. They used endoscope to access the critical area where the nail was lodged in the stomach and removed it without any harm.
