More Omani women must be encouraged to take up jobs in fashion design, tailoring and embroidery, and they require adequate support, Oman’s Youth and Human Resources Committee of the Majlis Al Shura (Consultative Assembly) recently suggested after the Shura Council raised the idea of employing more women from the country in these fields, given their employment potential.

The meeting discussed the controls and standards set by the competent authorities to regulate women’s sewing shops and sought the opinion of the authorities on proposals to allow more female participation in the fashion industry and associated professions.

During the meeting, a specific mechanism was agreed upon as per which at the front of the sewing shops, there will be an Omani woman employee for taking measurements and design, and the shop should be under Omani management. Expatriate workers will be employed for sewing purpose only, an Omani newspaper reported.

The decision would be conveyed to the governorates after agreement with various government agencies.
