    Fiat

The Fiat New 500 (pictured) and the Smart fortwo, were the best-selling EVs in Italy last month.

MILAN -- Italy's new-car sales fell 14 percent in January to 134,001, according to data from the country's ministry of infrastructure and transport.

January had two fewer selling days than the same month of 2020. With the same number of selling days, sales would have declined by 5 percent.

Sales were hit by lower short-term rental demand, which fell 81 percent and a drop in self-registrations by dealerships, which dropped 22 percent.

Private demand remained more stable, falling just 0.6 percent, helped by scrapping incentives which offset the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Business sales declined 13 percent, while long-term rental demand fell 14 percent, according to data from market researcher Dataforce. Dealer registrations fell 22 percent.

Private demand was helped by a government program to subsidize new cars with low CO2 emissions, which had run out of funds by late October but was revived in late December. The government is providing 120 million euros ($140 million) to offer a 2,000-euro incentive to buyers of cars emitting up to 60 grams per km of CO2.

A further up to 6,000-euros Ecobonus is available if the new car is a full-electric or a plug-in hybrid model.

Customers who trade in old cars and buy one emitting between 61 g/km and 135 g/km of CO2 benefit from a 1,500-euro subsidy until June as part of a second, 250-million-euro finance program.

Dataforce forecasts 2021 sales in Italy will rise 12 percent to 1.55 million.

    Surge in electric sales

Despite the market slump, registrations of plug-in hybrid and full-electric vehicles rose 90 percent to 6,254 for a 4.6 percent market share.

Of these, sales of plug-in hybrid sales increased 180 percent to 3,760 for a 2.8 percent market share. Sales of full-electric vehicles increased 28 percent to 2,494 and their market share rose to 1.9 percent from 1.2 percent.

Full-hybrid and mild-hybrid sales were up 128 percent for a 24.3 percent market share.

The Fiat New 500 and the Smart ForTwo minicars were the most popular EVs last month, with 419 units sold of each. The Volvo XC 40 midsize SUV was the most popular plug-in hybrid choice, ahead of the Jeep Compass and Jeep Renegade.

Gasoline car sales fell 33 percent in January to a market share of 36 percent, 10.4 percentage points down from January 2020. Diesel demand fell 31 percent to a market share of 26.9 percent, 6.7 percentage points lower.

Sales of cars powered by liquefied petroleum gas were flat with a 6.1 percent market share.

Demand for vehicles driven by compressed natural gas fell 33 percent, giving the powertrain a market share of 2 percent.

The increase in sales of electrified vehicles helped lower carbon-dioxide emissions to an average of 128.6 grams per km for the month compared with 137.7 g/km in January 2020, importer association UNRAE said.

    Winners and losers

The new Stellantis group, born from the merger of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and PSA group, had a 39.3 percent share of the Italian market in its first month of operations, down 3.9 percentage points from the combined figure FCA and PSA held separately in January 2020.

Despite the drop, Stellantis's share was by far the largest, ahead of Volkswagen Group, with 15.9 percent (down 0.4 percentage points) and the Renault Group at 8.8 percent (up 0.4 percent).

Fiat brand registrations fell 22 percent, while Jeep dropped 8.5 percent. Alfa Romeo declined 48 percent and Lancia volume fell 35 percent.
Maserati sales rose 2.2 percent, while Peugeot sales were down 6.9 percent, Citroen dropped 20 percent and Opel sales fell 33 percent. DS was down 55 percent.

Within VW Group, VW brand sales dropped by 26 percent and Seat declined 24 percent. Skoda gained 5 percent, while Audi rose 3.4 percent. Porsche registrations fell 1.8 percent.

Renault Group's Dacia brand suffered a 12 percent drop, while Renault brand sales declined by 7.2 percent.

Ford's registrations were down 2 percent.

Toyota sales increased 18 percent, while Nissan fell 28 percent. Hyundai sales were down 5.9 percent and sister brand Kia fell 29 percent.

BMW brand sales rose 1.8 percent, while rival Mercedes-Benz was up 12 percent.
