Release of Rajiv Gandhi case life convicts: DMK protests Tamil Nadu governor’s inaction, boycotts assembly session

CHENNAI: The DMK on Tuesday announced that the party would boycott the entire session of the Tamil Nadu assembly to protest governor Banwarilal Purohit’s inaction on the cabinet advice to remit the sentence of the seven Rajiv Gandhi assassination case convicts and on the DMK’s petition listing out corruption charges against the chief minister and his colleagues. The Congress and the IUML too announced boycott of the session to protest the Centre’s contentious farm laws.
The DMK, and its allies, walked out to protest the governor’s address to the assembly.
Talking to reporters, DMK chief M K Stalin said the party submitted the petition of corruption charges against the EPS government on December 22. “The governor failed to act on our petition till date. It shows his support to the CM and the ministers,” Stalin charged.
Stalin criticised governor Purohit’s appreciation of the Union government’s budgetary allocation of Rs 1 lakh crore to the state infrastructure. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced in 2015 the setting up of AIIMS in Madurai. He enacted a drama of laying the foundation stone for the scheme ahead of general elections in 2019. Not a single brick has been moved even in 2021. This is the status of the schemes announced in the Union Budget,” the DMK leader said, alleging that the Union budget was beneficial only to the corporate firms.
Congress MLA J G Prince and IUML MLA KAM Muhammed Abubacker lashed out at the Union government for enacting three farm laws, going against the interest of the farmers.
