Udupi lays special focus on slow learners for upcoming SSLC examination

UDUPI: Department of public instruction as part of the SSLC exam road map preparation has decided to identify the academically backward student at the school level. School wise list of such students will be consolidated at the respective block education office level and submitted to the deputy director’s office within a week. A subject wise package to ensure they clear each of the subjects will be prepared and given to them.
This was among the many ideas that deputy commissioner G Jagadeesha put forth at a high level meeting organised by the department on means to improve SSLC results at the zilla panchayat meeting hall on Monday. The package in the form of a book or a ready reckoner guide will be given to the students to help them with their SSLC examination preparation. The administration will take up the task of printing these ready reckoners.
Likewise, DC mooted the idea of preparing a book that contained commonly asked diagrams across subjects including science, mathematics, social science so that students are conversant with them. This will encourage students to learn with pictorial aides and thus help the slow learners. Subject teachers should be attached to groups of slow learners to bring them up to speed with needs of the respective subjects in group learning activities, he said.
Officials who have adopted a school too should ensure that students in their respective school are up to the mark with their learning. “You should inspect their progress report,” DC said. In addition, the officials should also ensure that teachers have formulated a subject learning plan and if the same is being implemented or not. Mentor teachers should be appointed and they should be tasked with inspiring teachers, headmasters of schools to excel, he pointed.
In addition teachers should also be encouraged to upgrade their knowledge base and thereby inspire students to follow suit. DC instructed the block education officers to keep tabs on such teachers who could prove detrimental to enhancing the student learning process. Special attention should be paid to SSLC students studying in composite PU colleges as well in aided schools and those institutions which have sizable number of Muslim students.
Dr Y Naveen Bhat, CEO, Udupi Zilla Panchayat advised department officials to involve students of eighth and ninth standard in the Oduva Belaku programme in vogue wherein they borrow and read one book a day. Noting that this will stand them in good stead when they go to 10th standard, Dr Bhat also directed officials to assess the knowledge gained by students through online, offline and specially curated lessons for them through TV.
