Govt to implement NEP in over 15,000 schools, set up central university in Leh

New Delhi, Feb 1 (UNI) The National Education Policy (NEP) will be implemented in the curriculum of more than 15,000 schools in coming fiscal while a central university be established in Leh, Union Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on Monday while presenting Union Budget.
"More than 15,000 schools to include all components of the National Education Policy will be qualitatively strengthened; to enable them to emerge as exemplar schools in their regions, handhold and mentor other schools to achieve the ideals policy," Ms Sitharaman said.
The NEP, approved by Union Cabinet in June 2020, aims to bring changes in education from school to college level. The policy has come after a gap of more than 34 years. It calls for reforms both in teaching and syllabus to make education qualitative, accessible and universal.
Ms Sitharaman said at total of 100 new Sainik Schools will be set up in partnership with NGOs or private organisations.
The Finance Minister also proposed to set up a Higher Education Commission of India as an umbrella body having for standard setting, accreditation, regulation, and funding.
''Many of our cities have various research institutions, universities, and colleges supported by the Government of India. Hyderabad for example, has about 40 such major institutions. In nine such cities, we will create formal umbrella structures so that these institutes can have better synergy, while also retaining their autonomy. A glue grant will be set aside for this purpose,'' Ms Sitharaman said.
