Nagpur, Feb 1(UNI) Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh on Monday said that we will first check Sharjeel Umani's speeches at the Elgar Parishad and only if any objectionable statements are found, action will be taken against him.

The Elgar Parishad conclave was organised on Saturday in Pune and while speaking at the conference Sharjeel Usmani , a former student leader of Aligarh Muslim University, had allegedly made some offensive remarks about the Hindu community.

Speaking to the media here, Mr Deshmukh said the 'Elgar Parishad' is said to have made some offensive statements at the conference. The Maharashtra government will first examine the video of the event and only if any objectionable statements were found, action will be taken accordingly.

'We have asked for all the videos of all the speeches made at the Elgar Parishad. We will have to examine if anything objectionable was said or not and action will be taken accordingly," the minister said.

The eminent novelist Arundhati Roy, former IPS officer S M Mushrif, former Bombay High Court judge B G Kolse-Patil, ex-AMU student leader Sharjeel Usmani were those who participated in the event.

It must be mentioned here that earlier, several Left-leaning activists were arrested under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act for allegedly making provocative speeches at “Elgar Parishad” in Pune.
