Port Elizabeth police are searching for the mother of a baby found wrapped in a plastic bag dumped in bushes.

The baby girl was found in Valley Road, Baakens Valley on Sunday afternoon, Colonel Priscilla Naidu said.

The baby was found by someone rummaging through the bag.

"It is alleged that at about 13:00, bush dwellers were rummaging in the bush next to Tramways when they stumbled onto the black plastic bag dumped in bushes. Inside the bag, the infant was found with the umbilical cord still attached," Naidu said.

An inquest docket was opened.

Naidu said anyone with information about the mother should contact the Humewood police on 041 504 5019/20, Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or their nearest police station.
