More than a year after India recorded its first case of coronavirus, which triggered countrywide restrictions, the government today presents the Union Budget 2021 in parliament like never before. The country's health spending is likely to increase.
Another important news that's emerging from Myanmar where country's leader Aung San Suu Kyi was detained in an apparent coup and the military has declared one-year emergency.
Yesterday, Prime Minster Narendra Modi asserted that India is vaccinating its citizens "faster than anywhere in the world". In his monthly radio address "Mann Ki Baat", he also highlighted the fact that the country was able to reach out to others. More than 1.07 crore cases have been logged so far; 1.04 crore patients have recovered in the country in a year. Over 1.5 lakh deaths linked to Covid have been registered.
The number of healthcare workers vaccinated has crossed the 37 lakh-mark on the 15th day of the countrywide Covid-19 inoculation programme, the government data shows.
Meanwhile, vaccine maker AstraZeneca will deliver 30 per cent more coronavirus vaccine doses to the European Union than it pledged last week, European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen said Sunday, amid brewing tensions between the Swedish-British vaccine maker and the EU.
Farmers' protest near Delhi borders continues to grab the country's attention with more protesters joining the agitation after the clashes on Republic Day. PM Modi yesterday said "India was insulted by the insult to the tricolour".

This morning, Union Minister of State for Finance Anurag Thakur asserted that the budget 2021-22 will be in accordance with people's expectations, adding the centre is working towards "a self-reliant India", news agency ANI reported. "The Budget will be in accordance with people's expectations. Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas is the agenda of the Modi government. The government which functions on the mantra of ''Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas'' gave a new direction to India by announcing the Aatmanirbhar package, protecting it from the pandemic and bringing the economy back on track swiftly," Mr Thakur told ANI.

Will it be a budget like "never before" or just another in a series of "mini budgets" presented over the last year to resuscitate a sputtering economy, that's the trillion-dollar question waiting to be answered as India turns to Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman today for the country's expenditure plan. In the face of a slew of challenges ranging from a once-in-a-century pandemic, ensuing job losses, resentment among farmers and friction with neighbours, many expect Ms Sitharaman to announce generous public spending but also make tough choices given a mountain of debt." itemprop="description
