NEW DELHI: Twitter India on Monday blocked around 250 accounts on its platform on the request of the ministry of electronics and information technology.
According to sources, the suspended Twitter accounts were using 'Modi Planning Farmer Genocide' hashtag and making fake, intimidatory and provocative Tweets on January 30.
Some of the accounts withheld include those of Caravan Magazine, Kisan Ekta Morcha and few others which were managed by representatives of the agitating farmers.
Explaining its decision, Twitter said that it becomes necessary to withhold access to certain content if an authorized entity submits a properly scoped request.
"In our effort to make our services available to people everywhere, if we receive a properly scoped request from an authorized entity, it may be necessary to withhold access to certain content in a particular country," said the social media platform in a statement as quoted by ANI.
"Transparency is vital to protecting freedom of expression, so we have a notice policy for withheld content. Upon receipt of requests to withhold content, we will promptly notify affected account holders, said Twitter.
