Apple CEO Tim Cook on why privacy is one of the most important issues
Privacy — thanks to WhatsApp’s now deferred 'controversial' policy — has become a part of the conversation. A company that has always ‘championed’ the cause of privacy is Apple. In a recent interview with Fast Company, Apple CEO Tim Cook spoke about why privacy matters. "In terms of privacy, I think it is one of the top issues of the century," Cook said. He also said that climate change “is huge” before weighing in more on privacy. “We should put our deep thinking into that, and to decide how can we make these things better, and how do we leave something for the next generation that is a lot better than the current situation,” said the Apple CEO.
Cook also spoke about how the idea of ‘weakening’ end-to-end encryption worries him. “You know, I’m a big believer in encryption— in end-to-end encryption with no back doors — and so I do worry about anyone trying to break that in any kind of way or weaken it in any kind of way,” he said.
The Apple CEO touched on the subject of artificial intelligence (AI) and the pros and cons of it during the interview. “We have to have ethical AI, just like we have to have ethical data privacy and data collection. There’s an intersection of those two as well, right? Both are paramount and have to be worked on,” Cook told Fast Company.
Apple is gearing up to introduce a new privacy feature with a software update. The feature will give users the choice to block apps from tracking their personal data. Apps will have to get users’ permission before using any of their data. The feature has some app developers and companies like Facebook up in arms against Apple. Apple has made it clear that the feature is better for the privacy of users and will change the data collecting model apps had been using for years now.
