BJP functionary arrested for hate speech

Coimbatore, Feb 1 (UNI) A BJP functionary was arrested at
Mettupalayam near here for allegedly insulting Prophet
Muhammad while speaking at a meeting organised by the
party.
Police said the functionary Kalyanaraman was arrested and
cases were filed under eight sections of the IPC, including
hate speech, creating enmity between communities, inciting
religious violence and attempting to break the religious unity.
He was later remanded in custody.
His remarks triggered protests from Muslim outfits like SDPI
and Popular Front of India demanded Kalyanaraman's arrest.
About 25 SDPI workers were arrested by the police for pelting
stones at the BJP meeting.
Last evening, when Kalyanaraman was speaking at the meeting
organised in protest against an agitation launched by the SDPI
in support of Farmer's rally in Delhi on January 26, a group of
SDPI workers barged into the venue and attempted to disrupt
it alleging that the BJP functionary insulted Prophet Muhammad.
The SDPI protest featured a person dressed up as Prime Minister
Narendra Modi and they also allegedly made remarks critical of
Mr Modi.
After police removed the SDPI workers, another group of workers
turned up at the venue and pelted stones, following which police
used mild force to disperse them.
Later, another group of SDPi workers staged a protest in front
of SP's office. However, they later dispersed after police
informed them that Kalayanaraman and two others were arrested.
As the news of arrest of 25 SDPI workers spread, protests broke
out and more than 300 people were detained for staging road
blockade at various places in and around Mettupalayam.
Coimbatore city and rural police have sounded an alert across
the district following the tension at Mettupalayam.
