Govt tries to sweeten tea workers' life

New Delhi, Feb 1 (UNI) Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, in her Budget speech on Monday, announced Rs 1,000 crore of welfare of tea workers in Assam and West Bengal.
Interestingly, both Assam and West Bengal are poll bound. Around 65 lakh people in Assam and 10 to 12 lakh in Bengal are directly or indirectly dependent on Tea plantation.
Tea plantation, introduced by Britishers, is considered one of the most hazardous occupations due to diseases associated with its plantation.
For SC, STs and women, Ms Sitharaman proposed a reduced margin money requirement from 25 per cent to 15 per cent on loans for activities allied to agriculture.
The government will establish 750 Eklavya Model Residential Schools in the tribal areas.
For Post Matric Scholarship Scheme, for the welfare of Scheduled Castes, the Central Assistance has been enhanced to a total of Rs. 35,219 crore for six years till 2025-2026 which will benefit four crore SC students, she said.
For jobs, the government will realign the National Apprenticeship Training Scheme (NATS) and pump Rs 3,000 crores into it.
