Kerala reports 5,266 new COVID cases, 5,730 recoveries: Health Minister

Thiruvananthapuram, Jan 31 (UNI) Kerala on Sunday registered 5,266 new COVID cases on Sunday, while 5,730 patients recovered from the disease, Health Minister KK Shailaja said.

"In the last 24 hours, COVID was confirmed in one person who recently came to Kerala from the UK (total 77 now) and their samples have been sent to NIV, Pune for further testing. So far, 10 people who came from the UK were diagnosed with the genetically modified virus," the minister said in a press release here this evening.

Meanwhile, 21 recent deaths were confirmed on Sunday due to COVID, taking the death toll in the state to 3,743.

She said 48,118 samples were tested during the last 24 hours and the test positivity rate is 10.94 %. Till now, a total of 96,25,913 samples have been sent for testing.

On Sunday, one place was declared as the new hotspot even as 22 areas were excluded. There are 375 hotspots in Kerala now.
