Chandigarh: Young, elderly stand up for farmers, stretch ‘matka chowk’ vigil to month

CHANDIGARH: For the past one month, people from all walks of life and of all age groups have been showing their support for the farmers in the city by carrying out peaceful protests in various parts.
The city’s renowned ‘matka chowk’ is one of the hotspots, where around more than 200 people gather every evening to demand the repeal of Centre’s farm laws.
“Even if we have to stand here for one year, we are ready to do it. People who have gathered here belong to this city as well as nearby areas,” said a youth at ‘matka chowk’.
“Nobody calls anyone; people come on their own. Social media has helped. If a person uploads a picture, the word spreads and more and more people join the protest,” said another person.
Starting from around 5pm, these people make sure to carry on their protests till around 10pm while holding posters mentioning ‘Take back farm laws’, ‘No farmers, no food’ and ‘Honk if you support the farmers’.
“Our loved ones are braving the cold at the Delhi borders. We are protesting against the laws peacefully here,” said another youth On Friday, writers, artists and social activists carried out a protest march in support of farmers at Sector 17 Plaza.
