Mumbai: BMC's food distribution effort during lockdown wins award

BMC official said that the civic body won the Nutrition awards for fighting the hunger pandemic.
MUMBAI: The BMC was on Saturday awarded the nutrition award at the RISE World Summit 2021 for its programme for distributing ‘food kits’ to the needy during the Covid-19 lockdown last year.
BMC officials said that the civic body won the Nutrition awards for fighting the hunger pandemic. The BMC won the award in the open category for the best Public Private Partnership (PPP) model of its Milkar initiative.

The BMC’s planning department headed by assistant municipal commissioner Dr Sangeeta Hasnale distributed around 3.75 crore meals averaging at around 7.5 lakh meals per day during the lockdown months starting April 2020. Officials said that approximately 4.5 lakh dry ration kits were also distributed.

“Dry ration kits were distributed through the software system by introducing the Mahadhanya app. The entire procedure from selecting needy till distribution was online and was audited at every level hence we could reach every needy person including those who were homeless, jobless, disabled divyang and even Commercial Sex Workers (CSWs) and those form the third gender,” a BMC official said.
The awards were organised by the RISE Infinity Foundation and Idobro Impact Solutions.
