Apple sets new iPhone ‘record’
Apple captured the top spot in the global smartphone market in Q4, 2020, says a report by Counterpoint Research. The Cupertino-based company shipped 81.9 million iPhone units for the same quarter, witnessing 13% Year-on-Year (YoY) growth.
As per the report, the growth is attributed due to the pent-up demand for a new 5G iPhone, strong carrier promotions (especially in the US) and the iPhone 11’s longevity.
Rival Samsung, on the other hand, shipped 62.5 million units in Q4 2020, down 11% YoY mainly due to the increase in Apple shipments across regions. The Counterpoint report says that the company’s Galaxy A series that offers mid to low-end category phones helped Samsung to perform well.
Samsung, however, retained its top position in the global smartphone market shipping 255.7 million units in 2020. Apple and Huawei are at 2nd and 3rd position with 15% and 14% market share.
The overall global smartphone market continues to recover with total shipments of 395.9 million units. The figure was 401.1 million units for the same quarter last year.
On the third spot is Xiaomi which shipped 43 million units globally. As per the Counterpoint report, Oppo and Vivo surpassed Huawei to capture fourth and fifth spots, respectively. Oppo grew 8% YoY and 10% QoQ to achieve 9% market share (34 million units) in Q4 2020.

Huawei was pushed to sixth position shipping only 33 million units in Q4, 2020. The company saw a 41% YoY decline compared to Q4, 2019 when it shipped 56.2 million units.
Another Chinese company Realme emerged as the fastest growing brand. Realme grew 80% YoY in Q4, 2020 and witnessed 65% YoY growth overall when compared to 2019.
Lenovo, LG and Tecno are other mobile brands that made it to the top 10 list with total shipments of 9.7, 7.6 and 7.3 million units.
