Dean Elgar off for x-rays after being hit by Pakistan speedster Shaheen

Proteas opener Dean Elgar has been sent for x-rays after taking a blow to the arm from Pakistan's Shaheen Shah Afridi in the first Test against Pakistan in Karachi on Thursday.

Elgar was eventually out for 29 in South Africa's second innings to leg-spinner Yasir Shah, but in the over before that he was receiving medical attention on the field having having been hit on the left arm by the tall Pakistan left-arm speedster.

A Cricket South Africa spokesperson confirmed after Elgar's dismissal that the severity of the injury was being examined. 

"Dean Elgar has gone for x-rays on his hand," the spokesperson confirmed.

"The bubble is not broken or compromised as the medical team is following the pre-arranged and agreed protocols for such an instance. An update will be issued when when possible."
