A 26-year-old suspect has been arrested and appeared in an Eastern Cape court in connection with the murder of a police officer earlier this month.
Warrant Officer Noxolo Mesilane's body was found hanging from a roof, with her hands tied behind her back.
On Tuesday, Fezile Somadlangathi appeared in the Flagstaff Magistrate's Court and will remain in custody until his next court appearance on 4 February 2021. The case was postponed for further investigation and a formal bail application.
Somadlangathi was arrested by the Hawks' Serious Organised Crime Investigation team on Sunday, said police spokesperson Warrant Officer Bonnie Nxumalo.
Mesilane was a branch commander at the Qhasa police station. The 41-year-old police officer's body was found in a house at Qhasa Village on 15 January.
A second body – that of a possible suspect in her murder – was found in Mesilane's police vehicle a few days after her death. The suspect had sustained bullet wounds to the head. The vehicle was found parked at a soccer field.
More arrests were expected, Nxumalo said.
"[The] investigation continues while additional arrests are imminent," Nxumalo said.
