MANGALKOT: A 35-year-old Trinamool Congress booth-level functionary died after being beaten with iron rods and sticks in East Burdwan’s Mangalkot while he was returning home on a motorbike on Tuesday.
Sanjit Ghosh’s family lodged an FIR against 16 BJP workers in the area. The saffron party denied the charge.
According to Trinamool block president Apurba Chowdhury, a group of BJP men cornered Sanjit and started beating him with iron rods and lathis; they also vandalised his motorbike. “Bleeding profusely, Sanjit was taken to Katwa hospital with critical injuries. Doctors referred him to Burdwan Medical College and Hospital. He died on the way there,” Chowdhury said.
Bengal BJP president Dilip Ghosh sought an investigation into the death. “There is no point making false allegations before the inquiry. Let police find out the facts and book the culprits,” he said.
Local BJP leaders said Sanjit was the victim of Trinamool’s internal feud. Trinamool minister Subrata Mukherjee, however, said: “Police have started an inquiry. Let them do it.”
