West Bengal: Woman jumps before train with daughter, both dead

Kanchana Biswas and her daughter Krittika
KOLKATA: A 36-year-old woman jumped in front of a speeding train along with her seven-year-old daughter near Belgharia railway station on Sealdah-Ranaghat main section on Tuesday morning.
The woman, Kanchana Biswas, and her daughter, Krittika, were residents of Chowdhury para off BN Ghoshal Road in Belgharia. Cops arrested the woman’s mother-in-law and two sisters-in-law after her family lodged a complaint.
Witnesses said the woman, whose husband, Biswanath, is a medicine supplier, was walking down the railway tracks, holding her daughter’s arms tightly. Locals raised an alarm when the train was approaching. But she jumped in front of the train along with the child. Prima facie, it appears that the woman had some problems with her in-laws.
“Her mother-in-law and two sisters-in-law used to mentally torment her. The situation had turned worse after she gave birth to a girl child. Unable to bear the torture any more, she took the drastic step to end her life along with her daughter,” said Pratap Das, cousin of the woman.
