Police diffuse agitation of terminated Tripura teachers on 52nd day in a pre-dawn action

Agartala, Jan 27 (UNI) Over a hundred of agitating jobless teachers were arrested and their demonstration stage was dismantled in a pre-dawn operation of Tripura police in the city a
few hours after District Magistrate of West Tripura promulgated 144 of CrPC.
The 10,323 jobless teachers have been in the sit-in relay demonstration for last 51 days
in front of City Centre along with their children and other family members seeking their
alternative livelihood. They held several rounds of talks with the state government on their
demand but did not yield any fruit and finally they had announced to step up their agitation
from today.
The jobless teachers held a candle march rally in the city on 72nd Republic Day and was
scheduled to stage a march towards the Civil Secretariat pleading the government to comply
with the commitment of their alternative livelihood by Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb in
October last year.
The District Magistrate and Collector Dr Sailesh Kr Yadav last night imposed section 144
of CrPC in Agartala Municipal Corporation area prohibiting the assembly of five or more
persons based on the police report of apprehension of breach of peace due to ongoing
agitation of a group of 10,323 terminated teachers.
Dr Yadav said there is likelihood of violent activities and apprehension of danger to human
life and public property and added, “An immediate prevention and speedy remedy is desirable
and that there is sufficient ground for imposing restriction on movement in AMC area to
maintain tranquillity.”
The arrested teachers alleged that armed police stormed their demonstration tent when most
of them were asleep and forcefully they were pushed to police vehicles without proper dress.
The ladies were not given time to dress up and when a few opposed to get arrested, police
allegedly assaulted and chased them on the street that caused injuries to more than 60
agitators, they claimed.
“Illegally, police seized rice, vegetables and other essential items along with the tents and
sound system from the spot. We have been put to an open police ground in bone biting chill
without even minimum protection, for which many of us fell ill. This is clearly a violation of
human rights and terror by the state on the teachers,” alleged Amal Debbarma, a leader of
the terminated teachers.
The opposition political parties including CPI(M) and Congress lambasted BJP-IPFT
government for police action on the jobless teachers and demanded immediate resolve
of their issue as per the commitment of the Chief Minister. They apprehended unless
minimum arrangement of livelihood of the terminated teachers is assured the agitation
would take a volatile shape.
As many as 84 jobless teachers died in last eight months including seven committed
suicide and many of the others claimed not able to do treatment due to shortage of
money after losing job. In 2014, the high court of Tripura had cancelled the job of
10,323 teachers due to irregularities in the process of appointment.
Later, Supreme Court upheld the decision and terminated them finally in March last
year.
