Bengaluru: V K Sasikala, expelled AIADMK leader and a close aide of former chief minister of Tamil Nadu J Jayalalithaa, was released from the Bengaluru Central Prison on Wednesday morning after completion of four-year jail term.
The 66-year-old who was convicted in misappropriation of assets case, is under treatment for Covid-19 at the city's Victoria Hospital and she may be discharged in 4-5 days if she fully recovers from the infection.
The prison staff wearing personal protective equipment visited Sasikala at the hospital ward to complete the jail formalities. Sasikala had been lodged at the Parappana Agrahara prison in Bengaluru since February 2017. She was sentenced to simple imprisonment of four years and was imposed a fine of Rs 10 crore. Failure to pay the fine within the completion of the four year term, would have led to an extension of her jail term by one more year. But since she paid the penalty last November, she can now walk free.
Sasikala was admitted to Bowring Hospital on January 20 and was shifted to Victoria hospital the day after she tested Covid positive. An official bulletin from the Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute that Victoria Hospital is affiliated to said she will continue to receive treatment at the hospital for a few more days as per the state's Covid protocol.
Although she has been relieved of oxygen support for the past 12 hours, she will be discharged on the 10th day from the day of admission if she is asymptomatic and is free of oxygen support for at least three days. “The decision for her to continue treatment in Victoria Hospital has been taken by her and her family members,” BMRCI Dean Dr C R Jayanthi said in the bulletin.
Sasikala was the longtime companion of Jayalalithaa and was seen as the former CM's political heir. Although she made a bid for the post of chief minister following Jayalalithaa's death in 2016, her plans were curtailed as the Supreme Court convicted her in the 21-year-old illegal assets case. Following her arrest, Edappadi K Palaniswamy, whom she had picked as Tamil Ndau chief minister, revolted against her and joined hands with another faction led by O Paneerselvam, to run the government. Within months, AIADMK expelled Sasikala from the party and also nullified all appointments she had made.
