One soldier was killed and three others were injured in an explosion detonated by militants in south Kashmir’s Kulgam on Wednesday morning.

“Four soldiers sustained splinter injuries. They were provided first aid and evacuated to the Army’s 92 Base Hospital in Srinagar,” an Army spokesman said. One of them died of his injuries, police officials said.

The explosion took place around 10:15 a.m. in a school building when an Army’s Road Opening Party was carrying out a sanitisation drill in Shamshipura area of Khanabal.

The police said the explosion occurred at the Govt. Middle School Subhanpora. A rudimentary improvised explosive device (IED), with a low-powered explosive and ball bearing, “was planted inside the school premises”.

“The personnel of the Army's 24 RR personnel would come and use the verandah of the building regularly for various purposes. The IED was most probably planted during the night before the incident. It is evident that the attack was planned in advance after observing troop movement for a sustained period of time,” Inspector General of Police Vijay Kumar said.

The blast is the first major attack carried out by militants in Kashmir this year.
