Gurgaon: Residents can now see the locations of all CCTV cameras installed in the city by the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) using its Gurugram mobile application.
GMDA hopes that the move will help bring down the number of traffic violations in the city. With access to the location of the cameras, residents will be alert while on city roads, officials said.
“We have established a wide network of CCTV cameras across the city and they are being used for policing and traffic management. Residents can now access their locations,” said a GMDA official.
The network of the CCTV cameras will eventually cover the entire city. In the first phase of the project, around 1,200 cameras are being installed across Gurgaon. “Of these, we have already installed around 750 cameras at several locations,” said the official.
Many of these cameras are installed with artificial intelligence for detection of traffic violations, parking violations, pothole detection, waterlogging and garbage, abandoned objects and crowd and vehicle count. The feed from these cameras is being monitored in GMDA’s integrated command and control centre. The information gathered from the feed is helping police in surveillance, traffic monitoring and control. Moreover, it is also helping other departments by providing information on streetlights, water, sewerage, garbage and property tax. A team of traffic police officers is regularly monitoring the feed and generating challans as applicable, the GMDA official added.
Gurugram, the mobile app developed by GMDA, not only helps map CCTV cameras but also lets residents know the air quality levels in real time. A network of low-cost air quality monitors was set up last year for the purpose. The monitors display the value of PM10 and PM2.5 on a real-time basis.
