LUCKNOW: A 62-year-old former village head was found murdered on Monday morning in Amethi.
A case has been lodged against the husband of the current village head on a complaint lodged by the family members, police said.
Circle office Anand Kumar said, “The body of Jageshwar Verma, former village head of Ramai, was found near the fields. He had a gun shot wound in his temple and back. The body has been sent for postmortem investigation. The police teams of Mohanganj police station are investigating the matter.”
According to the complaint, Verma was last seen on Sunday evening with some villagers. He left the place around 7pm but never reached his home. His body was spotted by some villagers on Monday morning.
Police have booked and detained one Babloo Singh, husband of the current village head, and two of his relatives under charges of murder.
While some said there was political rivalry between the two ahead of the upcoming panchayat elections, locals say Verma shared a cordial relation with Singh.
“Jageshwar was very close to Babloo Singh. It seems that their rivals are involved in the murder to target Babloo Singh,” said a villager.
The murder has stirred the political environment in the area. Amethi MP Smriti Irani spoke to the family of the deceased and assured them of her help.
