33 cyclists complete Tri Goa’s 600km BRM ride
PANAJI: A total of 33 cyclists successfully completed Tri Goa’s 600km Brevet de Randonneur Mondiaux (BRM) cycle ride from Panaji to Udipi and back on Monday. The cyclists began at 6 am on Sunday from Panaji and returned within the stipulated time of 40 hours at 10 pm on Monday. Adlin Mascarenhas (40), a mother of two from Camorlim village was the only woman cyclist to complete the 600km ride and became only the fourth woman, Super Randonneur cyclist in Goa. As many as 20 cyclists achieved the ‘Super Randonneur’ title in this season.
2nd Hockey 5s State Championship on Feb 7
PANAJI: Goans Hockey will be organising the 2nd Hockey 5s State Championships for Senior Men and Women on February 7, at Seraulim ground. Players born on or before 31/12/2001 and registered with Goans Hockey are eligible to participate in the tournament. Punjab beat Karnataka to enter Mushtaq Ali T20 semis
AHMEDABAD: Punjab defeated Karnataka by nine wickets in a Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 quarterfinal here at the Motera on Tuesday. Punjab bowled out Karnataka for 87 in 17.2 overs, and in reply chased the total, making 89 in 12.4 overs and losing just one wicket.
East Bengal rope in Subrata Paul on loan from Hyderabad
PANAJI: Indian Super League side SC East Bengal on Tuesday signed Subrata Paul for the remainder of the season, taking the star goalkeeper on loan from Hyderabad FC. Paul, 34, played six matches for Hyderabad with two clean sheets before being loaned out. This will be Paul’s second stint with SCEB after the 2008-09 season in which he bagged the Federation Cup. Paul has kept as many as 28 clean sheets in his ISL career with 91 appearances with clubs like Mumbai City FC, NorthEast United, Jamshedpur FC, and Hyderabad FC.
Sean Desai becomes first NFL coordinator of Indian descent
WASHINGTON: Indian-American Sean Desai has been named new defensive coordinator for Chicago Bears, making him the first National Football League (NFL) Coordinator of South Asian and Indian descent. Last week, the Chicago Bears promoted Desai, 37, from safeties coach to defensive coordinator. He replaces Chuck Pagano, who announced retirement early after 36 years in coaching.
AFC cancels U-16, U-19 championships in 2021
KUALA LUMPUR: The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has decided to cancel a number of competitions, including AFC U-16 Championship Bahrain 2020 and the AFC U-19 Championship Uzbekistan 2020, amid the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. The next editions of both competitions will be allocated to the same hosts in 2023 when the Uzbekistan Football Association will host the AFC U20 Asian Cup and Bahrain Football Association will stage the AFC U17 Asian Cup. The AFC has also decided to cancel the 2020 AFC Futsal Championship in Kuwait and the 2021 AFC Beach Soccer Asian Cup in Thailand, it added. Kuwait will stage the AFC Futsal Asian Cup 2022 and Thailand, the AFC Beach Soccer Asian Cup 2023.
2 UAE cricketers suspended for breaching ICC anti-corruption code
DUBAI: Cricketers Mohammad Naveed and Shairman Anwar Butt of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have been provisionally suspended after being found guilty of two offences each under the International Cricket Council (ICC) Anti-Corruption Code. The ICC said that Naveed and Shaiman were charged under the code “for attempting to corrupt matches of the ICC men’s T20 World Cup Qualifier 2019 in the UAE”. “The pair remains suspended and sanctions will follow in due course,” said the ICC. The ICC listed the articles under which the pair has been found guilty.
Afghanistan clean sweep Ireland
ABU DHABI: Leg-spinner Rashid Khan’s four-wicket haul and 48 runs helped Afghanistan beat Ireland by 36 runs in the third and final One-day International (ODI) to complete a clean sweep of the series here on Tuesday. Batting first, Afghanistan scored 266 for nine wickets in 50 overs. Ireland in reply could manage just 230. Afghanistan had beaten Ireland by 16 runs in the first ODI and then by seven wickets in the second match.
