Deeply disturbed by "worrying and painful" developments in Delhi : Mamata

Kolkata, Jan 26 (UNI) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday said she was deeply disturbed by "worrying and painful" developments that unfolded on the streets of Delhi.

Taking to her twitter handle, Ms Banerjee noted, " Deeply disturbed by worrying & painful developments that have unfolded on the streets of Delhi. "

"Centre's insensitive attitude and indifference towards our farmer brothers & sisters has to be blamed for this situation," she added.

"First, these laws were passed without taking farmers in confidence. And then despite protests across India & farmers camping near Delhi for last 2 months, they've been extremely casual in dealing with them," Ms Banerjee commented.

"Centre should engage with the farmers & repeal the draconian laws," the Chief Minister stated.

Violence erupted at Delhi's Tikri, Singhu and Ghazipur border on Tuesday morning as hundreds of farmers broke barricades while police used mild lathi charge and tear gas to stop them.

The farmers breached the barriers at the Nangloi. As per Delhi police, the farmers were supposed to move ahead with their tractor rally towards Najafgarh. However, a section of protestors decided to march towards central Delhi.

Hundreds of farmers have reached Delhi Akshardham Temple, both by foot and tractors, in an attempt to reach historic Rajpath in central Delhi for a march. However, they were halted by the police.

The situation turned tense as more and more farmers started reaching Temple Road.

As per the plan approved by the police, the farmers were allowed to take a march at three circular routes from Ghazipur, Singhu and Tikri border only after the Republic Day parade at Rajpath.

After deviating from the agreed route map, they reached the iconic Red Fort located at the Central Delhi in hundreds of tractors flying the Indian flag. They then hoisted the national flag at the iconic Red Fort.

To remove the protestors from the iconic Red Fort at Central Delhi, the Delhi Police personnel resorted to mild baton-charge.

Dramatic scenes of violent clashes were witnessed at the ITO area of Central Delhi as the farmers demonstrating against the three contentious farm laws forcibly entered the the city.

Some farmers, riding on their tractors, tried to evade blockades by recklessly driving their tractors and attempting to mow down the policemen.

Several people were injured.

The Delhi police used tear gas shells and cane-charged the farmers to disperse the crowd. A DTC bus was also vandalised by the protestors.
