Guwahati, Jan 26 (UNI) In a far cry from about a decade back when Republic Day was
synonymous with empty streets and an air of silence, the denizens of Guwahati, main
city of Assam, joined the nation in celebrating the Day with fervour.
From taking part in the official Republic Day function at Veterinary College Field to
decorating their vehicles with replicas of the Tricolour, the nationalist zeal of the people
was out on display.
The central celebration at the Veterinary College Field, where Governor Prof.Jagdish
Mukhi hoisted the National Flag, saw a large gathering of people from all walks of life,
the threat of the novel coronavirus also being little more than an after-thought for those
gathered.
The city saw vehicles donning the Tricolour in various forms.
Patriotic songs like “Saare Jaha Se Acchha” and “Suno Gaur Se Duniya Walo” were
played through loudspeakers at various public places, while the National Flag was
hoisted by individuals in their residences too.
People enjoyed the day off from work by going to picnics or visiting friends and relatives.
