LOS ANGELES — Gerald Wiegert, an entrepreneur who for three decades tried to build an American supercar to take on those from Lamborghini and Ferrari, died Jan. 15 at age 76. The Vector W8 was his most successful automotive project, but just 23 of the low-slung road rockets were built in the 1990s. Wiegert also worked with Toyota to develop its Calty Design Research facility in Newport Beach, Calif., and he designed water scooters and high-performance motorcycles.
