- The swimwear is inspired by the real-life story of Craig Foster and his friendship with an octopus.
- Only 100 pairs of the shorts will be up for sale at R990 each.
The South African documentary on Netflix, My Octopus Teacher, has inspired limited edition swimwear.
The film, about a South African diver who befriends an octopus, was a global hit and raked in several awards.
Craig Foster's unique bond with his oceanic friend was captured on film by director Pippa Elrich and is a real-life Charlotte's Web tale that played off in the icy waters of the Atlantic Ocean.
The film even inspired a hilarious viral parody, My Kreepy Teacher starring local comedian Glen Biderman-Pam. The spoof saw a Capetonian man befriend the Kreepy Krauly in his pool.
My Octopus Teacher continues to capture the imagination of viewers and has now even inspired a limited series of swim trunks by local company, Granadilla.
The Cape Town based swimwear and beach accessory brand has released a new pair of swim trunks called 'Octopus Diver' that pays homage to Craig’s incredible story.
According to Gabriel Meltz from Granadilla the team roped in a local designer to bring the concept, inspired by the film, to life.
"The filmmakers are aware that we’ve made them, and we gave Craig and Pippa a pair each," Gabriel said.
There will only be 100 pairs up for sale and each will be individually numbered. The powder blue shorts, which is proudly made in SA, costs R990.
Granadilla is a summer-loving local brand that embodies the energetic spirit of summer in Cape Town. Initially focusing on premium swim shorts made locally in South Africa, they are now expanding to bikinis, kiddies shorts, and other quintessential beach products.
