Tight vigil across Assam before Republic Day

SSB and Assam Police personnel take part in a rehearsal of the Republic Day parade in Tezpur on Sunday
GUWAHATI: Security was beefed up across the state ahead of Republic Day celebrations as Assam Police sounded high alert to all district police heads after the boycott call from various militants outfit.
The banned United Liberation Front of Asom – Independent (Ulfa-I) and NSCN(K) on Saturday called for a boycott of the Republic Day celebrations and a general strike on January 26.
Additional DGP (SB) Hiren Ch. Nath of Assam Police told TOI, “We have sounded a high alert after the boycott calls from several banned organizations. The banned organizations give this customary call for a general strike every year. But to be on the safer side, we have sounded a high alert and to ensure fool-proof security.”
He said security agencies have been asked to tighten the vigil in key areas of the states, and collect ground-level information in districts.
“There are no specific inputs, but we have not taken any chances. We have sounded an alert to all district SP of the state,” the additional DGP said.
Security personnel were seen at many places stopping and checking vehicles and several additional checkpoints have been erected in the city.
The main Republic Day function will be held at Khanapara Veterinary College playground in which Assam governor Prof Jagdish Mukhi will be present.
