Germany: Green Projects CAC Completes Water Electrolysis Plant for Research Project Align-CCUS

Editor: Ahlam Rais

The aim of the Align-CCUS project is to utilize CO2 in order to reduce CO2 emissions. As a part of this project, a water electrolysis plant has been established by Chemieanlagenbau Chemnitz who was responsible for planning, procurement, assembly and commissioning of the unit.

Germany – Chemieanlagenbau Chemnitz (CAC) has successfully completed a water electrolysis plant at the Innovation Centre of RWE Power in Niederaussem, North Rhine-Westphalia as part of the international, globally unique research project Align-CCUS. The goal of this project is to develop a technological chain for CO2 utilization and to put this into operation to reduce CO2 emissions. CO2 is directly separated from industrial sources, as it can be captured in far higher concentrations there than in the air. Assigned by Asahi Kasei Europe, the licensor for the water electrolysis, CAC successfully undertook the approach of planning, procurement, assembly and commissioning. For CAC, this is the first plant with this newly-developed technology.

The plant consists of skid mounted modules with the water electrolysis as well as a hydrogen compression and hydrogen treatment unit. The electrolyzer developed by Asahi Kasei and integrated into a fully-automated plant separates water into hydrogen and oxygen. The CO2 obtained from an existing RWE facility and the hydrogen as produced are the feedstocks to produces dimethylether (DME), which can be used as synthetic fuel.

Challenges for EPC Contractors

With an influx of largescale petrochemical construction projects, EPC Contractors will have to be confronted with challenges such as finding enough capacity and quality of construction manpower, delayed permits etc. which require an EPC strategy to stay competitive in this ever-growing market.

This 12-page Process Insight will discuss the current changes in the EPC business and the impact of these changes on EPC projects. Besides the effect of the Coronavirus as well as the current oil price crash on the contracting industry will also be analyzed and an outlook for the industry will be given.

In the Align-CCUS project, 30 companies, research institutes and universities from throughout Europe are pursuing the goal of transforming six European industrial regions into economically robust centers with significantly reduced CO2 emissions. The partners received 18 million dollars of funding at European and national level, working in six interlinked research areas on carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS). Align-CCUS is the only project of its kind worldwide to construct and test a fully-integrated carbon capture and utilization chain (CCU) in an actual industrial environment.
