JAIPUR: A 45-year-old income tax officer allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself at a Covid-19 ward of Rajasthan University of Health Sciences (RUHS) hospital in Jaipur on Monday morning.
Vijay Kumar Mangla was convicted in a bribery case and was sentenced to five years of rigorous imprisonment by a special CBI court on January 21.
The court had also imposed a fine of Rs 5 lakh on him.
Mangla was admitted to the RUHS hospital after testing positive for coronavirus infection.
According to the police, the officer was posted in his home town Kota.
"He was caught by a CBI team for accepting a bribe of Rs 10 lakh almost four years ago. On January 21, he was convicted in the case," said Abhijeet Singh, deputy commissioner of police (East).
"He was undergoing treatment at a Covid ward on the sixth floor of the RUHS hospital. On Monday, he was seen at 4am while at around 5am he was found hanging from the ceiling," said a doctor.
According to the hospital authorities, Vijay was the only patient in the ward.
Police have informed his family in Kota about the incident.
