Chelsea 3-1 Luton: Tammy Abraham hat-trick in FA Cup

A Tammy Abraham hat-trick secured Chelsea victory over Luton Town in the FA Cup fourth round to relieve some pressure on manager Frank Lampard.

Abraham slotted in from Timo Werner's cut-back before nodding in a second from Reece James' chip.

Jordan Clark scored for the visitors - after an error by keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga- on 30 minutes to keep them in the game.

But Abraham poked home to seal victory before Timo Werner missed a penalty.

Chelsea will face Championship side Barnsley in the fifth round.

Chelsea - who won the competition in 2018 and were beaten finalists last season - were in complete control at 2-0 and Christian Pulisic and Abraham both went close to increasing their lead.

But Luton, who edged past Reading in the last round, settled into the game after James Bree crossed in for Clark to squeeze his shot under Kepa, who should have done better.

The Blues were sloppy at times in the second half and Luton had chances, Kepa saving from Harry Cornick and Tom Lockyer to redeem himself after the earlier error.

Callum Hudson-Odoi replaced Pulisic on 70 minutes and made an immediate impact, having a shot blocked with with his first touch before setting up Abraham with a low cross for Chelsea's third goal.

Werner, who scored his first goal in 13 games against Morecambe in the third round, had the chance to make it 4-1 five minutes from time after being tripped in the box by Clark, but saw his spot-kick saved by Luton keeper Simon Sluga.

It was a welcome victory for Lampard, who has come in for criticism over Chelsea's Premier League position - they sit ninth in the table after five defeats in their past eight games.

Abraham became the first Chelsea player to score an FA Cup hat-trick since Oscar against MK Dons in January 2016, and the Englishman to do so since Lampard got three goals against Macclesfield in January 2007.

The commentary team today done my head in, anyone would think it was a classroom of 5 year olds watching the game, thank god for the mute button.

Watched it live on BBC, but have to say that Karen Carney has the most irritating voice on TV.

When you hear someone Like Jimmy Floyd Hassselbaink speaking such accurate quality English it's shameful we were subjected to that moronic chav commentary. Had to mute it.
The point of having a summariser is to add a layer of insight to a particular passage of play, not to just repeat what we have just seen. The late Jimy Armfield on Radio was a master of this. Unfortunately, Karen isn't & the pitch of her voice does tend to grate, I'm afraid.

I find the radio commentary teams are much better than the TV. They 'paint a picture' of what is happening. The TV just say what they see.
Refereeing again a real mystery but not as great as the awful commentary team. It is not radio and we are not stupid. I pay for this via my licence fee.

Luto Town deserved better from the BBC.
Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink ex Chelsea and Karen Cairney ex Chelsea.,both chosen as pundits for the match.
Yet nobody invited on the show as a pundit on behalf of Luton Town.
We even had to endure listening to Hasselbaink talking about managing Burton Albion.
It might as well have been Chelsea TV it was so biased.

The only difference between our teams is the millions pumped into a failing club by the Oligarch. They paid more for their goalkeeper than we did for our entire team. TV money has kept them where they are. If it was down to gate receipts they would have been no more successful than Stoke. The core of our team made their way up from League Two and that is why we will always be proud of the Hatters.

Good game, Luton played well and had good fight.

Chelsea had the higher quality and Gilmore was a bright spark in the team, however it feels this Chelsea team really has another level or two to find and the manager needs to start working on the attacking chemisty.
Well done. Hell sea, good effort Luton. however, BBC what appalling commentary, please stop being woke, it is ruining your coverage of football.
