Warangal Urban: Noted allergist and immunologist Dr Vyakarnam Nageshwar on Sunday stressed on the need for people suffering from allergies to take proper precautions before taking Covid vaccination. He also urged the government to ensure that preloaded Epinephrine or Adrenaline injections are kept ready to help such people in the event of any emergency after vaccination.
Addressing a press meet here, Dr Nageshwar said: “Anyone with a recent history of food allergy should take treatment before vaccination, and those with Angioedema (visible lips swelling or throat itching or face swelling) or acute skin rashes should wait for reactions to subside before taking the vaccine. People with recent history of allergic anaphylaxis should compulsorily seek an allergist or immunologist opinion before getting vaccinated.” People who had recent drug allergies should also wait and seek opinion from an allergist before taking the shot.
“If anyone experiences rashes, swelling of face or lips, giddiness, hypotension and breathlessness within 30 minutes of vaccination, they should stay back at the vaccination centre to receive immediate medical attention and treatment. Never hide your allergic history with your doctor or paramedic before taking the vaccination shots,” Dr Nageshwar said, adding that anyone with past allergic reaction should take a family member along to the vaccination centre.
Stating that one should not miss their routine anti-allergic medication before the vaccination date or schedule, he said: “If aiming for better results after vaccination, alcohol consumption should be avoided for at least three days before and three days after vaccination.”
Dr Nageshawar, who is chief allergist and immunologist, Aswini Allergy Centre, said Covaxin developed by Bharat Biotech was getting appreciations from across the globe.
