Vaccination-drive gathers steam as dist adds more sites, leads in Punjab

LUDHIANA: After the initial tepid response, the vaccination drive is gaining momentum in Ludhiana district, with as many as 1,886 health workers taking the shot on Friday, which is highest for a day among the districts of the state.
According to the health department data, on the inaugural day of vaccination, 214 persons were given the jab at five centres, including Civil Hospital, Ludhiana, sub-divisional hospitals (SDH) in Khanna and Jagraon, and CMCH and DMCH, by as many teams.
The number of persons vaccinated had increased to 340 on the third day of vaccination when the shots were given at five places once again. The data indicates that the number dropped to 213, lowest since the start of the vaccination drive, on January 20 when four teams had administered the vaccine at just two centres.
However, that number jumped by over three times to 673 the next day, as the vaccination was conducted at eight centres by 11 teams. On Friday, the number of healthcare workers vaccinated hit 1,886, who were given the jab at 15 sites by 28 teams. The district health department’s target for the day, however, was 2,550.
As per the data, DMCH vaccinated maximum 530 persons on Friday, whereas only 60 persons received the shot at SDH Raikot, lowest for any healthcare institution. In the rural Sidhwan Bet health centre, 107 persons were vaccinated during the day. The daily list of vaccination across various districts of the state shows that the highest number of persons vaccinated was in Ludhiana district on Friday, whereas Moga saw the lowest count of 51. In Jalandhar district, 1,595 healthcare workers were given the jab and SAS Nagar vaccinated 924 health professionals.
Civil surgeon Dr Sukhjeevan Kakkar, who was among those taking the jab on Friday, said the response is improving as healthcare workers are coming forward to get vaccinated. They are also creating awareness about the benefits of taking the shot, he added.
