GURUGRAM: A 65-year-old woman living alone in a two-storey independent house in Sohna has been murdered, in a case of suspected robbery that has put the security of senior citizens in the city in the spotlight.
The victim has been identified as Veena Devi. While her husband died a few years ago, her son lives with his family in London and her daughter resides in Australia.
Police said the crime came to light when the woman’s domestic staff came to work at her house on Thursday morning. She knocked on the door and alerted the neighbours when there was no response. Veena Devi’s neighbours then informed the police.
A team from the Sohna police station soon arrived, broke open the door and found the woman lying in a pool of blood in her bedroom. She was taken to a private hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.
Police suspect robbers had broken in the early hours of Thursday, attacked the woman and escaped with valuables.
An FIR was registered against unidentified accused at the Sohna police station. ACP (crime) Preet Pal Sangwan said they have identified two accused, one of whom is a juvenile (15 years).
“Initial investigation has revealed that the accused knew that the women lived alone and there was jewellery as well as other valuables at home. One of the suspects is a former tenant of the woman,” the ACP said.
In August 2019, a 72-year-old retired administrator of an export house was found murdered at her home in DLF-1, where she lived alone. Indra Khanna’s body was first discovered by her sister Devika Narula, who lives in Sushant Lok. The murder had come to light after calls to Indra went unanswered.
