Chandrapur: A one-and-half-year-old leopardess was killed after getting trapped in chain-link fencing of a rice mill near Mindhala village in Nagbhid tehsil. The carcass of the leopardess along with a carcass of a wild-boar was recovered on Friday morning.
Forest officials have ruled out possibility of poaching claiming that all body parts of the animal were intact.
Officials presume that the beast had apparently entered Sadguru Sai Kurpa Rice Mill compound pursuing wild boars sometime during the night. It appears that the leopardess had killed a boar, but the sounder of boars retaliated forcing it to flee. Officials suggested that the leopardess may have tried to creep through the chain-link fence and got tangled in it. The beast may have struggled for quite a time and then died of exhaustion and injuries, the officials suspect.
Rice mill owner Vilas Giripunje discovered the carcass stuck in the chain-link fence and informed forest officials of Nagbhid range.
DCF, Bramhapuri forest division, Dipesh Malhotra, ACF RM Wakde and RFO MB Gaikwad rushed to the spot. The carcass was removed from the wire fencing and was taken to Nagbhid forest range office for necropsy. Veterinary doctors have collected the viscera samples for testing.
