Work on a 14-bedded health centre, with a dialysis unit will begin soon in Benaulim, informed local MLA Churchill Alemao.

Alemao also said that the work on the Sinquetim-Benaulim bridge would also begin.

There was a demand for the health centre from the locals as they have to go to the distant Cansaulim health centre for any medical treatment.

With a health centre in Benaulim, neighbouring villages will also benefit.  Colva comes under the jurisdiction of Cansaulim health centre while the villages of Varca, Orlim, Carmona and Cavelossim fall under the jurisdiction of Chinchinim health centre.

While the plan to set up the hospital was initiated several years ago, an ‘objection’ forced the MLA to look at other sites for setting up the hospital.

Eventually, a Provedoria-owned land was handed over to the Directorate of Health Services (DHS) for the project.

The process of land handover has been completed and further procedure is underway.

Speaking about the setting up of the health facility, Alemao said, “The setting up of a health centre for the Benaulim constituency is a very important step. Locals have to go to Chinchinim and Cansaulim PHCs. The plan is to build 14-bedded hospital with facilities including a dialysis centre like that which is set up in Navelim. We had seen a location at Mondo and it was okayed but due to objections, it was scrapped. Another location has now been finalised and okayed and the hospital will be built there.”

Regarding the restarting of the work on the Sinquetim-Benaulim bridge, Alemao informed that the tender for the bridge has been passed and will be opened soon, following which the work on completing the remaining work would begin.
