Importance of RTI Act stressed

Imphal, January 21 2021: The Manipur Information Commission organised a one day awareness programme on RTI (Right To Information) Act at the community hall at Pujah ground, Wangkhei today.

State Chief Information Commissioner Oinam Sunil, State Information Commissioner Dr Soibam Ibomcha attended the event as presidium members.

At the event as chief guest, Oinam Sunil said the RTI Act is a tool to bring transparency and fight corruption.

The Act was enacted in 2005 .

The Manipur Information Commission receives about 200-300 RTI applications and disposes of about 170 applications a year, he said, adding that the MIC is the "most active commission" in the North-East.

On an average, most of the cases are disposed of in about 2 months.

First such Act was enacted in 1766 in Sweden.

Then the US and Norway enacted their version of the Act in 1966 and 1970 respectively while India enacted the RTI Act in 2005, he added.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was also an RTI activist before he joined politics.

People should understand the Act to reap the benefits it has to offer, he said.

Advocate Dr Ch Narendra, Deputy Registrar of the MIC S Inao and State Information Commissioner Soibam Ibomcha also spoke about RTI Act.
