Bhubaneswar: This year, students will appear for high school certificate (HSC) examination in their own schools instead of other schools like previous years. The invigilators will be from other schools. The Board of Secondary Education (BSE) has announced this on Friday.

The BSE sources said it took this decision to prevent students and their parents from travelling long distances and staying outside during this Covid-19 situation. The examination will start from May 3 and continue till May 15. Around 6.5 lakh students may sit for the board examination this year.

School and mass education minister Samir Ranjan Dash said his department has taken this decision keeping the Covid-19 situation in mind. “Students of more than 8000 high schools will appear for the Class Xth board examination at their own schools. Normally students face problems while searching for rooms near the examination centre and staying in groups. Health is important for us during this situation so that we took this decision,” he added.

Educationist and former BSE president Jahan Ara Begum said the state government has taken this step because of the extraordinary situation emerging due to the pandemic. “I welcome this decision because it will prevent students and their parents from traveling to other places for the examination during this Covid-19 time. But the government should take strict measures to discourage malpractice in the examination halls,” she added.

This time, the department has already reduced 30 per cent of the course curriculum. Besides, the students will have to appear for the examination for 80 marks of questions, while the evaluation will be done from a total of 100 marks, BSE sources said.

The students will answer 50 marks (objective type questions) in OMR sheets, while they will answer another 30 marks (subjective type questions) in question-cum-answer booklet. They will get four sets of questions for some subjects like language papers, math, science and social sciences, while a single set for some other subjects.

Earlier, the state government had decided to provide a free examination guide ‘Parikshya Darpan’ to Class X students to help them in their preparation for the coming board examination.
