MUMBAI: Dharavi on Friday reported zero
Covid-19 cases for the second time since the coronavirus induced lockdown, officials said.
Last time Asia’s largest slum had reported zero Covid-19 cases was on December 25.
This was the first time since April 1, when the first
coronavirus case was reported in Dharavi that the slum pocket had reported no new case in a single day.
According to BMC data, so far Dharavi has reported 3,904 cases of which only 10 are active. 3,582 persons have recovered and been discharged from
Covid centres.
So far, 312 people have died due to Covid-19 in Dharavi.
On April 1 last year, a 56-year-old man from Dharavi’s
Baliga Nagar had tested positive creating panic and fear about the spread of the deadly virus in the dense slum pocket. This was the first Covid-19 case in the slum pocket. BMC officials said that even in Dadar they had acquired several community halls and schools for hosting Covid-19 patients and high risk contacts. Local hospitals were also taken. But with the number of new cases declining, the halls, schools and hospitals were returned.
On December 26, the Dadar area had also reported zero Covid-19 cases. Both Dadar and Dharavi fall in the BMC’s G-North ward.
