Compensation given to kin of four deceased Ramanathapuram fishermen

MADURAI: A compensation of Rs 10 lakh each was given to the families of four fishermen in Ramanathapuram district who drowned when their boat sank in an incident involving a Sri Lankan navy vessel on January 18 night.
The compensation from the Chief Minister’s Public Relief Fund was handed over to the kin of the deceased fishermen -- A Mesiya, 30, of Thangachimadam in Rameswaram, V Nagaraj, 52, of Vattanvalasai near Mandapam, S Senthil Kumar, 32, of Thaathanenthal near Keelakarai and N Samson Darwin, 28, of the Sri Lankan refugee camp at Mandapam. District collector Dinesh Ponraj Oliver and MLA M Manikandan handed over the cheques.
According to the collector, the victims are the sole bread winners of their families. The families would be pushed into financial distress due to the deaths of the men.
“One of the men has a 20-day-old child and another has two toddlers,” he said. The CM has announced a government job to a family member of each of the deceased men.
