Two people were arrested in the Johannesburg city centre after allegedly assaulting two metro police officers on Tuesday.
Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) spokesperson Xolani Fihla said on Thursday that the two officers were conducting foot patrols when they came across two men sleeping on the pavement next to the Department of Transport.
"Officers asked them to move from the sidewalk. The two males started verbally assaulting the officers, they picked up bricks and threw them at the officers. The officers requested backup and the suspects were restrained and searched," said Fihla.
The two men were arrested and charged with assault with the intent of causing grievous bodily harm, resisting arrest, and possession of dangerous weapons after a knife and scissors were found in their possession.
"The two arresting officers were injured during the incident. They were taken to hospital with slight injuries and released the same day," said Fihla.
