BROOKLYN, N.Y: Petri Plumbing & Heating, Inc., a family-owned home service company serving Brooklyn and Manhattan for more than 100 years, is offering tips on how to protect your water heater during the typically cold winter months in New York.

For many homeowners, water heater maintenance falls well below routine heating and cooling maintenance in terms of priority. That is why Michael Petri, owner of Petri Plumbing & Heating, is urging homeowners to be cognizant of the health of their water heaters.

Most homeowners don't think of water heater maintenance until a problem occurs, and by that time it is too late. With consistently cold temperatures, winter months are a good time to proactive when it comes to water heater prep and maintenance, said Petri. Often times, we see pipes freeze or even bursts because they haven't been properly insulated. A simple tune up can help prevent these issues before they happen.

Here are some tips to protect water heaters during the winter months

Insulate water heater pipes Exposed water heater pipes have to work harder to maintain heat. Insulated pipes will make it easier for water heaters to produce hot water. In addition to that, insulation can also prevent pipes from freezing or bursting.
Flush the system Flushing the water heater is another option, which will remove any built-up sediment. Eliminating sediment will extend the systems life and help prevent rust and clogs in the drain valve.
Consider installing a recirculation system Installing a recirculation system will allow homeowners to have hot water when they need it at a fixture. This will also allow the heater to warm pipes at a consistent rate to prevent water lines from freezing.
Drain water heater system For those planning to leave for a long period of time during the winter months, draining the water heater is essential to prevent damage. Any amount of water left inside the tank can potentially freeze and cause damage to the internal components of the system. When draining the water heater, isolate the water to the heater.

Every homeowner needs and must maintain a water heater. Keeping the system running properly is much easier to do if you use one of these tips, said Petri. Small steps can prevent you from paying money out of your pocket to buy a new system.
